The sunnah of Friday

Nadia Ahmed October 23, 2021

Friday is a special day for Muslims as stated by our prophet (PBUH) and there are many sunnah of friday specified in hadiths. Also, The Qur’an invokes the importance of Friday as a sacred day of worship in a chapter called “Al-Jumah,” meaning the day of congregation, which is also the word for Friday in Arabic.

It states, “O you who believe! When you are called to congregational (Friday) prayer, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off trade. That is better for you if you but knew.”

surah jummah

From Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

From Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” When it is Friday, the angels stand at every door of the mosque and write down the names of those who come to pray. They also write down the name of everyone who enters the mosque to pray, whether they came or not. When the Imam ascends to deliver the khutbah, they fold up their scrolls and listen attentively until he finishes his preaching, then they unfold their scrolls again. Everyone whose name has been written will certainly be caught by death even if he were an infant crawling on his mother’s lap. However, those who have been entered on the list but did not come to the mosque will be spared death provided they do not meet with an accident along the way.”

Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, #929

These are The Sunnah of Friday

ghusl

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty.

Al-Bukhari , chapter the superity of Ghusl on Friday 2/356

Use miswak for teeth cleaning

From Abu Dharr-al-Ghifari (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” If anyone cleans his teeth with a miswak on Friday, then this is sufficient for him.”

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.

Wear Clean and presentable clothes

From Abu Hurayrah (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Allah loves the look of a person who wears his best clothes on Fridays.”

O Muslims, make sure you wear your very best for this day.

Apply Perfume ( non-alcoholic) and also kohl to the eyes

From Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Anyone who puts kohl in his eyes on Friday will remain healthy so long as he continues to do so. Anyone who takes a bath on Friday, will remain healthy so long as he takes a bath every Friday. Anyone who makes wudu, will be healthy so long as he makes wudu every Friday.”

From Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Anyone who applies perfume to his body, should do so to such an extent that he can smell it while standing in Jumu’ah (Friday) salah.”

[Bukhari Vol. 1 #562]

Cutting your nails

From ibn `Umar (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Let every one of you ensure that he cuts his nails on Friday because they are the roots of Hajar Aswad.”

[Bukhari Vol. 1, #622]

Read surah al-kahf

From Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” If someone reads Surah Al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, he will be blessed with illumination from one level to the next until the Day of Resurrection.”

[Tirmidhi Vol. 3, Book 10, Hadith 972]

If it’s possible for one to read the entire chapter, we can also read at least the first ten verses or the last ten verses of the surah.

Make dua for Muslims

From Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Anyone who prays on Friday for something good concerning another person, Allah will grant him his own request also. Anyone who makes a supplication (dua) seeking the happiness of another Muslim brother or to keep away sorrow from him, Allah will accept his prayer and that which he asked for his brother.”

[Tirmidhi # 962]

Send Durood upon our Prophet (PBUH)

From Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

” Anyone who sends durood upon me once, Allah Ta’ala will send ten duroods upon him.”

[Tirmidhi # 982]

This is quite a promise, don’t you think?

Attend Friday prayers and listen to the khutbah attentively

Friday prayers are to be performed in the congregation. If there is a separate arrangement for women in the masjid for Friday prayers, you can attend it too.

Allah says in the Quran (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salah (prayer) on Friday (Jumuah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumuah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!”

[al-Jumu’ah 62:9]

Listening to the khutbah is equally important. Listen attentively and ponder upon it. Do not whisper or talk during the khutbah.

“Whoever says to his friend while Imam is delivering Khutbah on Friday “keep quiet” has also commit an absurdity.”

(Muslim and Bukhari)

Allah Ta’ala wants his servants to benefit from the special day of Friday. He loves everyone who uses this opportunity to become a better Muslim and who walks away with a good deed for this life and a reward in the next.

Practice all of the sunnah of friday every week until it becomes a habit. I pray that Allah has showered you with all the rewards possible, Ameen!

And Allah knows Best
