What Do We Need To Know About Pride Or Arrogance?

Nadia Ahmed August 4, 2021

The word “Pride or Arrogance” means – Having or showing an insulting sense of superiority.

To understand the meaning of the word Arrogance, let us look at what the dictionary says about it and then try to find out from where this pride comes:

– Having or showing an insulting sense of superiority

In other words, To show arrogance is to think that you are better than others in a way that insults them. It simply means: thinking that you are superior to someone else in every way. Such a person will even be reluctant to see any good quality in others because he would feel they were getting special treatment only if there is some good quality present somewhere in their body! In short – If you think you are better than others in all aspects, then you have an arrogant attitude.

What does Islam say about pride or arrogance?

The first person who showed arrogance was ‘iblis’ and having pride is one of the traits of the evil one. Allaah commanded him to prostrate to Adam but he refused and was arrogant, and said, “I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay.” It was this trait of arrogance that made him face the wrath of Allah(SWT) and got him expelled from heaven.

As we know from the verse;

And recall when We asked the angels73 to prostrate themselves before Adam; all prostrated themselves except Iblis,74 who said: “Shall I prostrate myself before him whom You created of clay?” He then continued: “Look! This is he whom You have exalted above me! If you will grant me respite till the Day of Resurrection I shall uproot the whole of his progeny75 except only a few.”

Quran 17:61-62

One of the popular hadith about arrogance is narrated by the Prophet (saws) as

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes and his shoes to look good?” He said, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

Narrated by Muslim, 91.

How to know if you are arrogant or have pride?

Pride is that character trait or attribute of the soul that makes him think very highly about himself. when you come across the following signs of arrogance or pride in yourself, know that it is a disease rather than a show of strength and power:

• You feel annoyed with others because you see other people as a beast rather than human.

• You think you are better at everything than everyone else around.

• Meaningless arguments always start from you- just to prove how right you are.

• When someone doesn’t give in to your demands, you say hurtful words.

. you expect respect from everyone

-Arrogance is to reject the truth and look down on people.”

And if a person feels arrogant, it means he thinks highly of himself.

These are the signs of arrogance. Arrogant people think they have no need for advice or reminders because they think they know everything already, so why listen to others? For them, only their opinion matters because they feel it is always right and correct! They will never admit to being wrong or making a mistake.

Having pride can also have a negative effect on your character or behavior

-You feel envious and angry at everything.

-you are unloved by people.

How to overcome this deadly disease of arrogance?

The most important cure, as always, is to know Allah well. One of the best ways to do this is by reading His Book and reflecting on it carefully; following the commands that will help you strengthen your faith in Him and His Messenger (saws). Remembering death at all times will also help greatly because we know when a person dies he or she remains in one state forever. We ask Allah to make us of those who are safe from such evil traits! May Allah have mercy on us and save us from the hellfire!

Recognize the beauty of humbleness by reflecting on the creation of Allah and all His different creations, whether it be in small insects or big animals, frozen water, and burning fire. Reflecting on this will help you realize that there is none like unto Him.

Do not take lightly the disease of pride because it can destroy a person leading him to disobedience towards his Lord and turning away from the truth as was the case with some of those who had knowledge before us; they disrespected their rulers thinking that they are better than them. This led them to rebel against their ruling; so when Allah’s punishment came upon them, they were destroyed by their own hands (as a result). One does not need much intelligence to realize that many such people exist today also amongst those who call themselves Muslims.

We can’t have pride without shame. Pride is the belief that someone or something is better than others, and it’s why we judge people. Emotional distress (such as feeling humiliated) has been shown to be a consequence of excessive self-esteem and arrogance. It may also lead you to ignore your own faults while focusing on other people’s mistakes instead, which could cause problems in any relationships with friends or family members who don’t feel well respected by you–or even those who do respect you for being so arrogant!
